SPHS a model school?

So today at school we were told that there was going to be a big assembly with a bunch of high profile people. No one knew what it was going to be about so we were all anxious. We were about to leave to head to the auditorium when the principal got over the intercom and read some fancy pants statement about how happy she was about the assembly. Then the whole schoool piled into the auditorium.

Once we were all in the auditorium, ms crocker decided to be all happy and excited in introducting the first guest, a woman who has been known for her good work in schools. So this lady got up and spoke and as i listened to her, i started to laugh. She said with all my years of experience, “south portland high school is one of the model schools that i’ve seen” she also praised our teachers and staff for doing a great job because our school went from 66% to 86% of graduates going on to college. why is that something i’m mad about?she neglected to say that our high school has one of the worst dropout rated in the state. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense that they like our school so much. Oh, and did I mention that our PSAT and SAT scores are way below average? How is that not taken into consideration? Our teachers tell us day in and day out how important the SATs are, yet the majority of our students to terrible on them. If we are the model school, then the rest of the statewide schools are screwed.

Later in her speach she started talking about a national award that she was so happy to present at “such a great school” and I was thinking about all the teachers at our school and I could only think of a handfull that might get the award. She went on talking about the prize: $25,000 cash, a paid trip to a national conference of the best teachers in the entire US…sounds pretty good…but who deserves that at South Portland High? Well, the person they chose as an exceptional teacher was a very deserveing teacher, Mr Brian Jandreau. I was very happy for him. I had him freshman year and he was by far my favorite teacher. I later had him in summer school sophmore year and he was really great. He’s a great teacher and a good person and I’m glad he won the award, I just don’t think they should have talked about how “awesome” our school is because most kids wouldn’t agree.
